Se discuten en detalle seis aspectos de la relación entre tecnologías y cultura, basados en escritos de la época: el concepto de tejne, en particular la Medicina, en la Atenas clásica; el desarrollo de las tecnologías militares en tiempos helenísticos; la autoimagen de los tecnólogos a través del arte funerario de los primeros tiempos del imperio romano; las disputas territoriales a comienzos del siglo II dC; el estatus social de los arquitectos. El libro describe, en cada caso, la importancia y las interacciones de las tecnologías y sus practicantes con aspectos políticos, sociales, económicos y religiosos de sus respectivas épocas. Una excelente ilustración del caracter situado de las tecnologías.
